Puerto Maldonado with about 50,000 inhabitants is the capital city of the department of Madre de Dios which is located in the southeastern part of the country. It limits to the north with Ucayali, to the south and west with Puno, and to the east with Brazil and Bolivia. Its territory comprises parts of the High and Low Jungle, with hot and humid tropical weather, and rains from November through April. The average temperature is 25ºC (77ºF).
A new road from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado has been built and the journey by road is now about 12 hours but most people still fly. The flight from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado takes about 30 minutes. Puerto Maldonado is located where the Tambopato river and the Madre de Dios river meet. There are several lodges in the jungle along these rivers.
